Theatre-In-Education For Children

Schools and Institutions recognize the benefits of having Theatre-In-Education as a separate subject in the curriculum and make sure it is made an integral part of their time-table.

The facilitators of Phoenix T.I.E Company undertake the complete task as a drama teacher. They not only conduct drama lessons and workshops but also integrate drama with other subjects of the curriculum. Numerous studies have demonstrated a correlation between drama involvement and academic achievement. Phoenix Theatre-In-education classes provide a platform to all students to understand the essence and importance of the syllabus and lessons in the education system by relating to it personally on emotional and cognitive grounds- this helps students to have an experiential learning. Phoenix works towards evolving a drama program which is uniquely suited to the needs and situations of children.

Theatre holds the key to opening up minds, both young and mature- which eventually leads to a more positive outlook towards life. Young children explore their environment through role-playing adults and situations that they observe. No one teaches them to do this. It is an instinctive act with which they come to terms with the world. Older children and adults are able to make better sense of all aspects of life, be it their own personality or motivations, or the complexities of science, social science, mathematics or language. The Phoenix Theatre-In-Education Company has created a curriculum for holistic learning that encompasses all these areas.

Theatre has an innate ability to address the issues and challenges that a child is faced with in the process of growing up. For example:

  • Bullying and violence
  • Pressure of imbibing ethics – developing social and moral skills
  • Preparing for life as an adult
  • Academics that seem unrelated to life and are therefore boring
  • Spending six to eight hours in a classroom when the cricket/football field is beckoning
  • Competition and comparison with classmates/siblings
  • Social, religious and gender inequities and biases
  • Unending curiosity that often goes unsatisfied
  • Lack of concentration and limited attention span
  • Relationships with adults and peers and the infinite conflicts there in
  • Dealing with psycho-social, emotional and physical changes
  • The eternal need for and lack of self-discipline
  • An over-active imagination that often has no outlet
  • Lack of opportunities of real-life situations in which they can make mistakes and learn from them
  • Retaining their animal intuition while becoming social beings
